25 Questions to ask your child that go beyond, “How was your day?”

Some kids come home from school chatting away, ready to tell you everything that happened. Other kids are a closed book, and turning the pages is a delicate task. Here are some questions to help change up the after school conversation and get kids talking.

  1. What made you smile today?
  2. What was the best thing that happened at school today?
  3. What was the worst thing that happened at school today?
  4. What made you feel proud today?
  5. Tell me something that made you laugh today.
  6. What was the book about that your teacher read?
  7. Can you tell me an example of kindness you saw/showed?
  8. If you could choose, who would you like to sit by in class? Who would you not want to sit by in class? Why?
  9. Did you learn something you didn’t understand?
  10. What’s the biggest difference between this year and last year?
  11. Teach me something I don’t know.
  12. Who did you sit by at lunch today? What did you talk about?
  13. Can you show me something you learned today?
  14. Did anyone do anything silly to make you laugh?
  15. What part of school is your favorite?
  16. What was the most interesting/funny thing your teacher said today?
  17. What class rules does your teacher say are important?
  18. Did you help anyone today?
  19. Tell me one interesting fact about your teacher.
  20. What’s your favorite time of day at school?
  21. Rate your day on a scale from 1-10.
  22. What are you looking forward to tomorrow?
  23. Did you get frustrated with anything at school today?
  24. What is your least favorite part of the school building? And favorite?
  25. Tell me about a new word you heard today at school.
